How do I register? What happens after I register?

In order to register you will first go to the Team Membership page and select your payment option. After your payment is received, we will then send you a welcome email. This email will contain all the information you need to know including the forms you need to fill out, how to join the Facebook Group Page, details on our training calendar and the weekly email. After that, then join us at our next practice!

How are you different from other clubs?

Most clubs follow one of 2 structures. One setup is a club with many members (hundreds or thousands) that charges a very low annual fee. The practices will be less of a coached workout and more of a group workout. Some clubs will even charge more for the coached workouts. Another club structure is based on personal coaching. Each member is really a personal client of the coach. The coach would then have group practices. Both of these clubs do not typically train most members for a specific event, and they do not focus their training in a series of seasons.

How are you different from online coaching?

In a few words... interaction/motivation. When you have an online coach it is virtually impossible for your coach to correct your form. Additionally, your coach is unable to answer those quick questions as they arise during your workout. Finally, by using an online coach you are still working out by yourself and thus need to generate your own motivation. By being a member of TVTC these problems no longer exist! The coaches are there to answer those questions, and the other team members will help provide motivation.

Can't I just buy an online calendar? What makes you different?

Yes, you can buy a calendar online. But, as you know not every person is the same. People come in with different backgrounds, different fitness levels, different time constraints, and different goals. A static online calendar does not address these factors. It can’t! When you join TVTC with a Team Membership you will have access to coaches at 3-6 coached practices every week. You can ask the coaches questions that are specific to you. If you feel that you need more specific attention you can also sign up for a Personal Membership.

Do I need to be in shape before I can join your club?

Not at all, come as you are. We can help you get started! Though, a fitness base will be helpful in getting you prepared for your event, we will help you set your goals to match your incoming fitness to make sure you are successful and improving.

Is this team just for beginners?

No. Our team is made up of beginners, intermediates and advanced athletes; although, the bulk of our athletes are beginner to intermediate. Many of our intermediate athletes started as beginners a few years ago.

I've seen your team in the community, but you look so intimidating. Is your team only for serious athletes?

No. It might be the matching gear. ;) Our team is made up of beginners, intermediates and advanced athletes; although, the bulk of our athletes are beginner to intermediate. Many of our intermediate athletes started as beginners a few years ago. One our main goals is to provide a great team atmosphere. Through this we are able to have beginners workout alongside intermediates.

I can't make night practices or live outside the Tri-Valley/Tri-City area, will I still benefit from joining your club?

Yes! While attending more practices is more beneficial to you, just being on the team is much better than training on your own without any instruction. When you sign up with a Team Membership you will receive weekly emails that provide workouts when there are no coached workouts. It additionally provides workouts in case you can't make a coached workout. Some members who have hectic work schedules, young families, work at night, or some other reason find that night practices do not work. They have been very successful just following the "This Week in Training" section of the weekly email while attending 1-2 team workouts per month. The Team Membership also gives you access to the Facebook Group Page, which is heavily used by our members. If you prefer to do your long rides on Thursdays at 1pm, post in on the group page and see who is interested in joining you.

Practices

Do I have to come to every practice?

Not at all, but the more you put in, the more you get out of it. We don’t expect you to be available to run around the Tri-Valley area every night of the week. Join us when you can. We’ll let you know when there are milestone practices that you really shouldn’t miss.

Where do you practice? What are the locations?

You can see some of our upcoming practice locations on our calendar. We have about 20 locations that we rotate through; most are in Pleasanton, Dublin, San Ramon, Danville, Livermore, Sunol, Union City, Newark, and Fremont. We try to alternate between the Fremont and Pleasanton side of the hill as much as possible so no one has to travel too far for practice.

How do you correct each person's form with so many people at a practice?

Technique takes a lot of repetition to correct. So, while you’re practicing your new super swim technique over and over, we can give another athlete a key piece to work on. We don’t believe giving you a laundry list of corrections will bring the best improvements. We want to focus on the most beneficial pieces, and once those improvements are made, we’ll give you another piece to tackle. Additionally, not everyone needs the same help at the same time.

How many practices do you have a week?

We have anywhere from 3 to 5 coached practices every week. The number of practices depends on the time of the year and facility availability. See our calendar for our list of upcoming practices.

I am slower (or faster) than most athletes, will there be someone at practice to workout with?

Absolutely! The beauty of this sport is that everyone has certain strengths and weaknesses. If you are a strong swimmer but a weaker runner, you might workout with a completely different set of people for each sport. TVTC is made up of athletes of all fitness and experience levels.

Do you practice in the rain (bad weather)?

Yes, because there is always a chance that the big race you’ve been training for will require you to race in bad weather! As long as conditions are safe, practice will be held. We want you to be prepared for your race. If you haven't trained in the rain and it rains during your race, how will you handle that? Coming to practice during bad weather is even more critical. The team provides the motivation to workout in the bad weather, while the coaches provide the knowledge to practice safely and improve your skills.

Should I be sore after every workout?

We believe that consistent training is better than a crushing workout followed by 3 days of mush workouts (or 3 days recovery). We want to challenge you at every workout, but not break you down so much that you can't workout the next day.

Education

What is a triathlon? What are the distances?

Triathlon is a sport in which the goal is to cover a specific distance by swimming, biking, and running, as fast as you can (or as fast as you wish to go). The Ironman is what most people think of when they hear "triathlon". This is the longest distance, but not the most common distance. What also comes to mind when you hear "Ironman" is Kona, Hawaii. Kona is not the only Ironman, but one of many. It was the first and is currently the World Championship Ironman Race. The Ironman distances are a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and a 26.2 mile run (a marathon).

Can you teach me to have quick transitions?

Of course! We believe transitions to be the 4th sport and consider fast transitions as free speed. We not only believe it, we practice what we preach. We will cover tips and techniques at practice to get you in and out of transition and back to the good stuff! Our coaches have some of the fastest transitions when they race. Coach Aubrey says "I may not be the fastest runner by a long shot, but I take pride in the fact that I put my shoes on faster than ANYBODY!" :)

Will I learn everything in one season?

Unfortunately not. While you will learn a ton of valuable information your first season, you won't learn everything. Not only is there a large amount of information to absorb, there are also skills (biomechanical and motor) that can be refined over time. As with every sport, triathlon continues to evolve. The coaches of TVTC continually research new drills/techniques, attend coaching symposiums and communicate with top leaders in the sport so that our members will always receive the best possible coaching.

How do I become a better swimmer?

Come to practice! Swimming is 80% technique, 20% fitness. Just jumping into a pool and swimming laps will not bring you the best results. When you join our weekly swim practices you will not only learn the correct form, but also the correct drills/workouts to improve your swimming. One benefit to TVTC members is that there is no extra charge for swim workouts. That's right, not only do you not have to join a separate masters program, but also there are no pool entry fees!

I've done several races before and always bonk/run out of energy. Can you help me?

Absolutely! While we are not nutritionists we have studied and practiced nutrition quite extensively. At practices we discuss different nutrition products and fueling plans. Every race requires a specific approach to fueling and hydration. We can help guide you to finding the right mix for you.

Gear

What gear do I need? What gear would be nice to have?

Need to have:
Swim: bathing suit, goggles, wetsuit (if doing colder water events)
Bike: any bike, helmet, sunglasses, gloves
Run: shoes

Nice to have:
Swim: swim cap, wetsuit (if doing warmer water events)
Bike: road/tri bike, aero wheels, aero helmet, bike computer/power meter, bike shoes/pedals
Run: running watch

What kind of bike do I need?

You can use almost any bike you want. Obviously, a bike cruiser will not work as well as a road/tri bike. However, it will still work. If you only have a mountain bike, you can put on slick tires and still have good trainings and a great race. You certainly don't need to spend thousands of dollars on an all carbon bike in order to complete a triathlon.

Why do I have hot feet?

The main reason for hot feet during running is due to wearing the wrong type of socks. Make sure the socks you wear are not made of cotton. There are several brands of socks designed specifically for running. Stop by our partner TriNow Fitness at their shop in Dublin to pick up a pair.

How do I purchase TVTC gear?

TVTC sells custom cycling tops/shorts, triathlon tops/shorts/suits, jackets, arm warmers, hats/visors, run shirts, and water bottles. Some of these items (hats/visors, run shirts, arm warmers, and water bottles) are almost always available. The rest of the items must be special ordered. Contact Coach Lael at lael@trivalleytriclub.com to receive the most up to date order form. Once your order has been placed it will take around 6 weeks to receive your gear. During that time period you will receive an invoice for payment. Since these items are special order, returns are not accepted.

Where can I purchase triathlon gear?

The best place to purchase all your triathlon gear, outside of the custom TVTC gear, is from our partner TriNow Fitness. They are located in Dublin.

Communication

How do you usually communicate with the athletes?

Beyond talking to athletes at practices, the coaches communicate in one of three ways: 1) weekly emails for Team level members, 2) the Facebook group page or company page, or 3) direct emails.

What if I don’t have a Facebook page?

That's ok, many people are not crazy about Facebook. You can create a fake account to be used only for team communication. If you choose not to, then you will unfortunately miss out on a lot of the athlete communication.

Payments/Finance

What is the discount for sponsors?

The discounts for sponsors vary. Please view our sponsors page for more information on all of our sponsors. Additionally, all members can view the discounts page when they log in to see specific discounts.

How much does a membership cost?

There are many different fees depending on which membership/program you are joining/buying. To be a part of our team you can view our club page. If you were interested in personal coaching, then you can view our club page as well for more details. If you wanted to be a part of our team, but want specific Ironman information, then check out our ironman page. If, perhaps, you are interested in a couple of private lessons to work on specific skills, then check out our private lesson page.

What are my membership dues used for? Why does it cost xxx?

We are a non-profit organization, so all of your membership dues go directly back to the club. This helps expand or improve upon coaching time, expertise and education, membership expansion efforts (advertising), member benefits expansion through partnerships, insurance and facilities. The top three expenditures for the club are facilities, insurance and coaching fees. Each of our coaches spend at least 20 hours a week outside of their normal lives and jobs on coaching, coaching education, and building relationships within our sport to provide the best training, education and service to you, our members. Without this effort the club would not be as useful to our members.

Are there refunds?

The short answer is no. The monthly payment option is completely controlled by you. It is up to you to cancel your payment profile with Paypal. For the other payment options, we will not issue a refund unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Miscellaneous

I don't know how to swim. Can I still join?

Yes, absolutely! We would love to teach you to enjoy the water and be a confident competent swimmer. Swimming is our forte! We are one of the only clubs in the bay area with very strong roots in swim coaching. We are the perfect club for an athlete that is interested in triathlon, but has shied away because of the swim portion. We have taught many athletes to swim and made many athletes much much faster. Come, be our next success story.

How can I be sure that I'll be ready for my race?

We have a proven track record of successfully preparing hundreds of athletes over the last couple of years for dozens of events. Each season we teach you about correct form, nutrition, proper equipment, transitions, and most importantly how to train. We provide you a plan how to make that next event a successful race. We are there to motivate you when you need it, and answer any questions you have. Come join us and see what we can do for you!

I've done several races before but haven't improved. Can you help me?

Definitely! This is actually quite common. Many times people find a training calendar online and just stick with it. Unfortunately, sometimes the calendar isn't appropriate for them. Maybe it needs to be altered for their incoming fitness. Maybe due to some limitation. Another common situation is when an athlete thinks the best way to get fast is to always work out hard and fast. This, unfortunately, is not the secret of success. Whatever the reason is, we will work with you to understand your background so we can help you move forward. Come join us and see what we can do for you!

I've done several races before, why should I join your team?

In a word....team! Maybe you need the team atmosphere to provide you that extra motivation when it's cold and rainy outside. Maybe your training has stagnated and your performance has not improved. Maybe your technique is inefficient. Maybe you need to be held accountable. Maybe you just want a change of scenery. Or, maybe you just want to meet new people. No matter your situation, there is always a benefit to joining TVTC! Ask us about our annual Sur-Tri-Vor event.

Do I have to sign up for a race in order to workout?

No, you do not have to race! But, we encourage you to participate in an event because they're fun, and help motivate you to work towards a specific goal. Some members of our team have taken a few seasons before they tackled their first race. It's really up to you. However, our year is organized into 3 x 4 month seasons with a specific race at the end. All this means is that the practices will be geared towards those events. If you choose not to do an event you will potentially just have to modify the training.

Are you affiliated with SVTC?

No. SVTC is the Silicon Valley Triathlon Club, located in the south bay, the other Valley. We don’t have any ties to them although our teams have similar colors.
